Blushing at her blunt comment and the unintended upset, Rowan leaned forward so speak quietly, words meant only for Marcus's ears, "I'm sorry about that, and I'll bear that in mind when speaking to your siblings. But I'm in a similar boat. My mother died a few months after giving birth to me with some muggle lung disease. Father doesn't know the name of it, only that by dying she placed a great inconvenience on him; in other words, me."
Marcus plopped back down on the bench, a look of shock and horror on his face. He had never heard of a father regarding his child in such a fashion.
A great inconvenience, Marcus thought to himself. He shook his slightly, trying to wrap his mind around the concept. He was used to a family that was full of love, caring, kind and genuine desire to be with one another. He was used to trips out for ice cream with his father and all his siblings. He was used to sporting events and other fun activities. He was used to spending his evenings in the kitchen with his father, cooking for the whole family. Marcus just couldn't believe it.
"I'm sorry to hear about your mum," he said meekly.
The food appeared in front of Marcus and he silently bowed his head and prayed. It was the same prayer he always said. With all humility, asking God to protect the ones he cared about and keep them in his sight always. When done, Marcus took a bite of the Shepard's Pie and felt the warmth of it melt over him. The food was amazing and instantly lifted Marcus' spirits.
